The Incredible Growth in China

The number of people online in China this month is estimated to be 10 million. As a proportion of the Chinese population, it may be only 1 per cent. But wait! This figure is doubling every year. So 2 per cent next year, 4 percent in 2002, maybe 8 per cent in 2003. 8 per cent is 100 million people online - more than the number of people who are online in USA!

Within three years, we will have a huge pool of younger educated Chinese people looking on the rest of the world through the Internet. Those who speak English will speak it as a second language. They will need sites that use an easy English style, or are written in mainland Chinese. Now is the time to be planning how to make accessible culturally-relevant pages for China.

I'd suggest this could include:

  1. Using easy-English idiom-free language and sentence construction. For an easy 1500-word vocabulary list, check http://www.voa.gov/special/sevocab.html
  2. Offering a second easy-English option of 'normal English' pages for second-language speakers
  3. Offering an onsite Chinese translator window so readers can click on difficult words. (Click on the Chinese flag at www.web-evangelism.com to see such a window).
  4. Chinese language pages which are not just translations of western pages, but are contextualized for the Chinese situation.

Here's more on the story:

BEIJING (AP) - China plans a campaign to bring industries, government offices and households online as part of a national strategy to make the Internet a more powerful engine for economic growth. Ministry of Information Industry Wu Jichuan said in Beijing that his agency intends to "rejuvenate" the digital electronics sector and do more to promote communications and software businesses, the official newspaper China Daily reported Wednesday. With the information industry growing at an annual rate of 20% - almost three times the 7% growth rate of the overall economy - China needs to readjust its economic structure to take advantage of that dynamism. At the same time, China is struggling to set up a regulatory system and laws to govern the fast-growing industry. See: http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2565280863-178

Asia Harvest

www.asiaharvest.org
Asia Harvest were formerly Asian Minorities Outreach and the latest issue of their newsletter (May 2001) arrived in our mail box during the week. The theme is China's Neglected Minorities and, not surprisingly, a large portion of the newsletter is given over to publicising and profiling editor Paul Hattaway's new book Operation China. Given the quality of the work that Paul produces it is well worth being on the mailing list for this newsletter: amo@xc.org. Operation China isn't the only new addition to the Asia Harvest family.

THE INTERNET IN CHINA
David Wang, head of Asian Outreach, was recently in Shanghai. In the Jan/Feb 2000 issue of Asian Report he comments on the changes in communication that are taking place in China. He notes that more and more children and young people in Shanghai are accessing the world through their own personal computers. A social scientist at the Shanghai Academy of Science told his party, "Over 9 million people in China now have access to the Internet. It will be at least 20 million by the year 2003. Beijing has accepted the fact there is no way to really control the growth, or the use of the Internet. The scientist, a non-Christian, asked Wang, "Will it be easier for you Christians to preach the Gospel to China then?" To find out how Wang responded you'll need to contact Asian Outreach for a copy of the Jan/Feb 2000 issue of Asian Report <AsianOutreach@xc.org>.

China's Unreached Cities

A Prayer Guide for 52 of China's Least Evangelised Cities By Paul Hattaway, Asian Minorities Outreach, 1999, 119 pages In China's Unreached Cities, researcher and author Paul Hattaway examines the spiritual condition of 52 of the last evangelised cities of China today. Many Christians around the world know of the revival that is happening in parts of Eastern China, but few are aware that hundreds of millions of city-dwellers in China remain completely unaffected by the Gospel. This large-format volume addresses that lack with extensive maps, diagrams, statistics, photographs and text. Each of the 52 cities receives a separate two-page profile. You can order copies direct from AMO in Thailand for about USD$13.00 <amo@xc.org>.

Chinese Seekers Site

*And, an Internet web site is being used to point Chinese web browsers to Christ. David Sanford is with the Luis Palau Evangelistic Association. "We've had an English home page and a Spanish language web site that both get a tremendous amount of traffic. But, for the first time we've done a foreign language web site that's seeker friendly. It seeks to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Chinese speaking and Chinese reading individuals throughout the world." Sanford says many are hoping this site will somehow be the springboard to get Palau into China for evangelistic meetings regularly. "He's already had the opportunity to present the Gospel in Shainghi. His dream and prayer is to be able to go back and preach in the huge soccer stadium there in Shainghi to over 100,000 people. And, then be able to go to other cities throughout China." You can find the site at: www.Palau.org

Conflict In Chinese Churches

http://www.cccowe.org
Chinese Coordination Centre of World Evangelism The feature article in the latest issue of Chinese Around the World (March 2001) deals with the issue of Conflict Resolution in Chinese Churches. The article's author Johan Fu, is a senior lecturer in Biblical Studies at the Bible College of Queensland, Australia. It is often said that the problem with the Chinese is that, instead of combining and working together against a common adversary, Chinese attack one another. Fu claims that this characteristic carries over into the Chinese church and in this article he attempts to identify some of the roots of the problem and suggest ways of addressing it. If you would like text copy, let me know: BobHall@cmd.org.nz.

600,000 CHINESE TURN TO CHRIST THROUGH TRAINING PROGRAM Evangelism Explosion (EE) is reporting amazing response to the gospel through the distribution of a training program in China. Three EE missionaries told of their training from a Malaysian man who came to China a few years ago. He reportedly taught a number of unofficial EE clinics on his own and brought with him materials from Malaysia. Because it's hard to get these materials into China, the local Chinese simply photocopied the materials as the work grew. The three missionaries say up to 600,000 people have become believers through EE's approach in the area. (Mission Network News)

Hopeway

Site for Vietnamese and Chinese

http://www.hopeway.org/

Thai-Hoa Nguyen has launched a new site called HOPEWAY. He is aiming at Vietnamese and Chinese speakers as well as English. He shares:

"As the Internet technology is more advanced, more people from anywhere in the world are using the Internet as their daily communication tool. Because some people notice the Internet provides variety of inappropriate contents, there are real and essential needs to have good and hopeful contents online.

Once we received the Good News, we can't keep this Hopeful news inside but have to share with other peoples. In early Spring 2000, pastors, brothers, and sisters from different churches started to create http://www.hopeway.org/

Our mission:

  1. To spread the Gospel of Salvation to the Chinese and Vietnamese peoples who are scattering around the world
  2. To reach out to those looking for Hope
  3. To share God's love

Our plans:

  1. To simplify the gospel message so that anyone can understand and relate to their immediate needs
  2. To translate the gospel materials in Vietnamese, Chinese and other as available
  3. To provide gospel contents for missionaries and churches worldwide

Firm Foundations: Creation to Christ.
We do praise the Lord for their zeal to carry the Gospel to those who have not heard and we want to mention the following excellent item which can be very helpful in working with people either in English or other languages who do not have a Bible background. It is "Firm Foundations: Creation to Christ" and is available in English, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and other languages.

There are 50 lessons designed for a one-year course, but included is a plan for teaching in a shorter period of time if so desired. The teacher's manual includes three 17" X 22" color maps and one 17" X 66" color chart of the Bible events covered. The lessons begin with creation and follow God's revelation of the Gospel progressively through the Bible, highlighting key themes. The standard edition is designed for adults and teens.

There is also a Children's Edition for younger ages, and the 50 lessons in the Children's Edition parallel those in the adult edition. This course can be used very effectively in North American churches as a Sunday School class for people from other parts of the world who speak English as a second language. Many of these people are open to hearing about the Bible and Jesus Christ, but they often are confused by the standard preaching and teaching at churches because they don't understand even the basics of Bible truth.

Fundamental Baptist missionary friend John O'Brien gives the following testimony of the Russian edition of the 'Firm Foundations' course: "There is a comprehensive Chronological Gospel book ('Firm Foundations: Creation to Christ') in Russian being printed by New Tribes Mission. I've examined the book personally at length and have found it to be sound. We plan on using the book for discipleship for new converts. We've found this particular book a rare gem due to it's thoroughness in presenting the necessary principles of the Gospel: God's Holiness, Man's Sinful Depravity, Consequences of Sin, Promise of the Redeemer, Substitutionary Atonement, Salvation by God's grace."

Operation China

Paul Hattaway (a BOMM subscriber, by the way!), author of The 50 Most Unreached People Groups of China and Tibet, The Peoples of Vietnam, and China's Unreached Cities, has done it again with a new book which introduces all the peoples of China. Operation China introduces the reader, not only to the 1.2 billion Han Chinese but also to China's hidden minority groups. You will meet groups and cultures as diverse as the pale-faced, blue-eyed Muslims of Xinjiang and the tribal people of the jungles of Yunnan with their intricately-embroidered costumes, the fascinating proud Tibetans in the west and the nomadic hunters of the Eskimo-related tries in the extreme northeast of this vast country. Although numerically the minorities of China account for only 6.7% of China's population, they inhabit 62.5% of China's territory. This 700-page book comes with 740 FULL-COLOR photographs; ethno-linguistic, anthropological, and geographical data; maps, statistics, and a prayer calendar. Patrick Johnstone says that he has been using this book in developing the next edition of Operation World, and David Barrett, editor of the recently released World Christian Encyclopedia calls it "the most significant new contribution to missions research in 20 years."
