Signwriting

http://www.signwriting.org

This website has information on signwriting. Below is infomation about a missionary who uses signwriting.

Over 2000 Spanish signs from Madrid were typed into the SignWriter Computer Program's Spanish Sign Language Dictionary in 1996 by Steve and Dianne Parkhurst, two hearing American linguists, working with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL). The Summer Institute is connected with the Wycliffe Bible Translators. Steve and Dianne were first participants in the Summer Insistute's Mexican Sign Language Project in 1994.

Dianne and Steve decided to move to Madrid, Spain, in 1995 to record the Spanish Sign Language. The Parkhursts informed Valerie Sutton, SignWriting's inventor, that Spanish Sign Language had some handshapes that were not yet incorporated into the SignWriter Computer Program. So...Valerie worked to add the necessary handshapes to the software, which took two months. The result was SignWriter, version 4.3, completed in August, 1995, which supported the changes needed to record Spanish Sign Language and Portuguese Sign Language.

Christian Mission for the Deaf

http://members.tripod.com/cmdeaf/index.htm

They work in Africa (Congo, Nigeria, maybe other countries). They list offices in Canada and UK also.

Our news letter, Deaf Witness, is sent to active supporters, and discusses many concerns in need of prayer.

Who is CMD?

Christian Mission for the Deaf is a non-profit organization that focuses on the Spiritual needs of deaf Africans. With a home office in Detroit, MI., CMD utilizes a variety of resources to reach the deaf.

Deaf people face many barriers to "hearing" the Word of God. Illiteracy, isolation and geographical distance pose communication problems. The very nature of deafness itself complicates the problem since it is not an externally visible trait. Special methods are required to overcome these setbacks.

What is our purpose?

Since its founding in 1957, CMD's objectives have been to organize, operate, maintain, promote and encourage Gospel and education work among the deaf of Africa. Training local African Christian workers and leaders has been an instrumental method of our outreach.

What are our methods?

Language is the vehicle by which any two people must communicate. Since there are very few schools for the deaf in Africa, much of CMD's work has focused on opening schools. Training teachers and leaders, evangelism, Bible meetings, camps and youth centers are all part of the techniques used to reach the deaf. All efforts are especially geared to meeting the Spiritual, mental, emotional and social needs of the deaf. Most of our programs and sessions are conducted by Deaf nationals.

Communication of every form is used. This includes natural gestures, formal sign language, finger-spelling, writing, reading, speech, lip reading and hearing aids. This "total communication" approach helps the hearing impaired to rapidly develop a greater language competency and lays the foundation to understanding the abstracts of Biblical truth. Our goal is to be "all things to all men, that we might by all means save some." I Cor 9:19-22

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Deaf Ministries

http://www.csonline.net/ywam/MAIN.htm

For more information contact us at: ywam.deaf.min@dawnt.com

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Deaf Ministries provides opportunities for Deaf and Hearing to reach out to people in the world who have little opportunity to know the Gospel.

"Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people." -Helen Keller

We believe that God created people for relationships. He created men and women to have a relationship with Him and with others around them. These relationships are essential to finding fulfillment and purpose. A relationship with God is essential to eternal life.

Many will not have the opportunity to know Him because they will not "hear" the Gospel in the conventional way. Jesus died that ALL may come to know Him.

The Church of Jesus Christ is often referred to as sheep or a flock. Jesus said, "I have other sheep which are not yet in the fold. I must also bring them."

The Deaf are the 4th largest unreached people group in the world.
