Family Safe Internet - continued

* SEARCH ENGINES *

These search engines are built especially with family-friendly filtering features. Of course, you can't restrict kids to these search engines without personal supervision or a filtering pro- gram, but you can at least make sure that when you're searching the Web together, you don't end up someplace with objection- able content.

AltaVista Family Filter

http://doc.altavista.com/help/search/family_help.html

AV Family Filter uses three methods to reduce objectionable content from your search results.

Go Network

http://www.go.com/

If you use the Go Network for all our searching needs, click on GoGuardian to get a filtered list of sites suitable for families.

Magellan - Green Light Sites

http://magellan.excite.com/

Select the "Green Light Sites" option with the radio button at the top of the page. It is for a high-quality, targeted search of reviewed sites that, at the time of review, contained no content intended for mature audiences. The Green Light appears only on http sites, and applies only to the site itself, not to any outside links.

Yahooligans

http://www.yahooligans.com/

A "just for kids" version of Yahoo!, and a safe search engine for any kid who likes poking around the Web.

* BROWSERS FOR KIDS *

Providing maximum unsupervised filtering capabilities with kids in mind, these browsers focus on linking to prescreened, pre- approved sites. They tend to be animated and lively, and they offer regularly updated lists of sites kids enjoy.

SurfMonkey

http://www.surfmonkey.com/default.asp

SurfMonkey advertises over a million kid-friendly sites with a browser that is safe, easy, fun, and best of all - free. It includes safe e-mail and chat rooms. SurfMonkey.com is working with Microsoft Corporation on new, specialized extensions to the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 browser.

KidDesk Internet Safe

http://www.edmark.com/prod/kdis/

KidDesk Internet Safe works alongside your existing browser. Internet access through an Internet Service Provider is required. KidDesk Internet Safe also works seamlessly with America Online. Parents can also download safe Internet site links to add to their child's desktop with Edmark's Kid-Safe Sites! This service provides a regularly updated list of fun, teacher- and parent-approved sites.

ChiBrow

http://www.chibrow.com/

ChiBrow comes complete with pre-defined allowable sites that have proven to be safe. On an on-going basis ChiBrow provides updates that can be downloaded into the database. Along with the update, you're be given a description of each of the sites to be added to your database. Parents can disallow any of these or add their own selections to the database.

This browser appears to require more parent management than others.

KiddoNet

http://www.kiddonet.com/

Content on KiddoNet is age appropriate and relevant to the interests and world of kids (ages from 4-7 and 8-13). Parents can add or delete sites on the database.

Currently, KiddoNet users cannot talk directly to each other or to outside people due to safety precautions. However, developers are working on a kid-safe monitored chat to be added to KiddoNet in the future.

KiddoNet is compatible with IE5, yet in some versions, there is a problem with one component that requires a downloadable file to correct it.

Safexplorer

Safexplorer is an easily customizable, family-friendly Internet browser that eliminates Internet dangers by providing a safe and enclosed virtual world for children, while allowing adults the freedom to roam beyond its protective boundaries. Download a trial version or read more about Safexplorer's many powerful features at the Safexplorer Web site. Safexplorer: http://www.safexplorer.com/
